F.A.Q

Photo, Negative and Slide scanning

Where do I send my photos to?
We are based in Epping, Essex. Our address is:

Photo S.O.S
9 Green Close
Epping Green
Essex
CM16 6PS

Once you complete your order, you will receive confirmation of your order and receipt of payment.

What do you scan?

We scan photos, negatives and slides. We scan from passport size to A4 size pictures. If you have larger images for scanning, please let us know so we can talk you through the options.

Which is better for photos – 300 or 600 dpi?
This is a common question. DPI stands for Dots Per Inch, and as scanning is the process of converting a paper image to a digital image, is used as a measure of the detail of the scan. Generally, 300 dpi is suitable for most purposes, but if you have plans to enlarge the images, or print them, then 600 dpi may provide a better result due to the additional information captured in the scanning process.

Which is better for Negatives and Slides – 1200 or 4800 dpi?

The same rules above apply. 1200 dpi and 4800 dpi for Negatives and Slides are the equivalent of 300 dpi and 600 dpi for photos and will bring the scanned images to the sizes you would expect of a scanned standard photo.  We don’t generally scan at higher resolutions as the file size increases without a similar increase in image quality.

How do I prepare my photos?

To ensure a smooth and efficient scan, we request that you remove any sticky adhesives (such as tape or blue tack) from the back of the photo, and that as far as possible you smooth down any bent corners. If you want photos to be scanned in a certain order, please bundle them in the order you require – such as by event or holiday, and secure them separately.

How do I get the photos to you?

We recommend that you send your photos to us via tracked delivery for your own peace of mind. There are a number of service providers, from Royal Mail to other courier companies that can collect from your door. www.interparcel.com offers a price comparison service based on speed of delivery, location and parcel size.

I don’t know exactly how many photos I have. What should I do?
Obviously, it is easier if you can count the photos; however, we accept that this is time-consuming and difficult with large numbers of photos. If it is not possible to count the photos, please make a reasonable estimate as to the number of photos you think you have for scanning. We will contact you when we have calculated the final number of photos scanned– we will issue a refund if the estimate has been too generous and we will invoice you at the per photo price of the most appropriate package for any excess photos in the event of an underestimation. In the event of the number of photos greatly exceeding the package purchased, we will scan the relevant number of photos and contact you to discuss the next stage.  If you prefer to send the photos directly, we can invoice you after the scanning has been completed and we can provide final numbers.

Can I get extra copies on DVD?
If you would like extra copies, please contact us.

Do you store my images?
No. We retain images until we have received confirmation that your photos have been returned to you (via tracked delivery) and we hold them for a further two weeks after that date. We strongly recommend that you back your images up to your computer or an external hard drive to ensure their safety as we cannot retain images for any longer.
